ABOUT - Nelson Mandela was arrested on 5 August 1962 outside Howick, Natal, South Africa. He spent the next 27 years of his life in prison.

The Nelson Mandela Capture Site commemorates this landmark with a Visitor Centre that includes a replica of the car Mandela was in when he was arrested - an Austin Westminster 1962.

The exhibition focuses on struggles in this part of the country. Starting with the Bambatha Rebellion of 1906, it traces decades of resistance to colonial rule and apartheid, culminating in the mass mobilisation of the 1980s. The place of Mandela’s capture becomes a gateway to understanding the history of this province, and its contribution to the freedom of all South Africans.

The Visitor Centre is complemented with a ‘Long Walk to Freedom’ through the landscaped garden to view the iconic sculpture entitled ‘Release’, featuring 50 steel columns which dramatically come into focus as Mandela’s face from a particular vantage point.

Funded by the KwaZulu-Natal Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs Department (COGTA)

This virtual tour was made possible by Mike at Black-Coffee.

The table featured in the centre of the Visitor Centre consists of eight chapters.

Each chapter investigates a period of Nelson Mandela's life - exploring the people, places and events that shaped the man who would eventually lead our country into democracy.

The sculpture, a collaboration between artist Marco Cianfanelli and Jeremy Rose. Commemorating the 50th anniversary of Nelson Mandela's capture, it consists of 50 steel columns between 6 and 9.5 metres high, looking like a forest of steel poles.

To see the sculpture, the visitor walks along a path representing “the Long Walk to Freedom” towards the sculpture culminating at the viewing point. Here the vertical steel columns line up creating the illusion of a flat two-dimensional image magically recreating Mandela’s face, metaphorically announcing his return after his long absence from the world.

Walking closer towards and through the sculpture, the image dissolves back into the forest of 50 columns. When visitors look across the road, they will see the original memorial on the side of the road marking the spot of Mandela’s arrest.

Early organised resistance to racial segregation also came from South Africa’s Indian community. Most were descendants of more than 150 000 labourers who had been brought by ship from India to Natal. They “indentured” to work for low wages in poor working conditions for a period of five years.

By the time the Indian government stopped supplying labour in 1911, Durban was home to the largest concentration of Indians outside of India.

THE CONGRESS OF THE PEOPLE
- no audio

At its annual conference in 1954, the ANC planned a campaign to develop a vision of a non-racial democratic South Africa. Organised in the face of considerable obstruction from the Nationalist government, the Congress of the People captured the imagination of the country.

Some 3 000 people from all over South Africa attended the gathering in Kliptown in Soweto on 25-26 June 1955. The demands of the people were presented for adoption to this gathering in the form of a document called the Freedom Charter.

Take a moment to watch Nelson Mandela recounting the events that lead up to his capture when he visited this site in 2011.

“I was very fit those days, and I could virtually climb any wall. And then I looked at the back just at the rearview mirror. I saw there were two cars behind. Then I felt that, no, it would be ridiculous for me to try and escape, they’ll shoot me. And we stopped.”

The car Mandela was driving in was a 1962 Austin Westminster, a black six-cylinder automatic with a brown leather interior.

The owner and driver at the time of the arrest was a member of the ANC underground from Johannesburg named Cecil Williams.

Since a white man and a black man travelling together might have aroused suspicion, Mandela wore a chauffeur’s uniform and cap, although he was in the passenger seat at the time of his arrest.
